Number of Players: 3

Cards Used: 1 full deck of 48 cards

Game Length: 12 rounds

Goal: To form captured hands and capture high scoring cards

Sudaoshi has unique point values for the cards. In Sudaoshi the dregs, Curtain, and Phoenix cards are worth 10 points, the poetry slips are worth 1 point, and the animals and remaining 3 lights are worth 5 points. The total value of all 48 cards is 330 points.

At the beginning of each round the players take on a burden of 330 points in total. The dealer has a burden of 100 points, the player to his right has a burden of 110 points, and the player to his left has a burden of 120 points. The player who scores the least number of points during the current round will bear the 120 point burden during the next game, and the player who scores the most points will be the new dealer.

The dealer deals 7 cards to each player and 6 cards to the field. The deck is placed in the middle of the field.

Here's an example of a Sudaoshi starting position with the 3 players' hands, the field and the deck:
Once the players have their hands they need to check them for any dealt hands they may have received. There are 47 dealt hands in Sudaoshi (the same 47 that are used in Hachi-Hachi) which can be a little intimidating. In fact, there are only 12 basic hands; the rest of the hands are combinations of those 12. You can only have one dealt hand from the list; they don't stack. Here is a list of each hand's name, contents, and point value:

If a player has a dealt hand, the points listed above are the amount they receive from each other player, so the points are effectively doubled. It is possible for all three players to have dealt hands, in which case scorekeeping can get a little complicated. In order to claim a dealt hand, a player must show the relevant cards to the other players.

Once dealt hands have been scored, play begins. Starting with the dealer and continuing in a counter-clockwise direction, each player captures cards (as described in the General Rules). The round ends once all players have run out of cards. There are 4 captured hands in Sudaoshi, but play does not end when one is completed.

If a player has any of the captured hands listed below they gain those points from each of the other players. The two Hills hands are mutually exclusive, as are the two Rain hands. Players cannot receive points for both Over the Hills and The Hills, for example. The two Rain completed hands are only available to the player with the 120 point burden. They are worth 0 points to the other players. Players now add up the total value of the cards they have captured using the points given above. If a player ends a round with 4 animals, 4 slips, 7 dregs, and the Curtain card they would score 104 points (4x5, 4x1, 7x10, 1x10).

Once all the points have been calculated each player subtracts their burden from their score and the round ends. The highest scoring player becomes the dealer for the next round.
