Number of Players: 2

Cards Used: 1 full deck of 48 cards

Game Length: Varies

Goal: To empty your hand of all cards

Place 10 go stones (or similar objects) on a corner of the table. The dealer then deals 6 cards to his opponent and 6 to himself. The top card of the deck is turned over and placed in the middle of the table. This card is called the base card (‘äŽD).

The goal of the players is to empty their hands. This is done by playing cards in sequential order starting off of the base card. If, for example, the base card is a May card, then the player has to play a June card. The order loops, so December is followed by January. In one turn a player plays as many cards in order as they can, but can only play one card from each month at a time. Once a player is no longer able to play any cards he says 'pass', his turn ends, and his opponent continues the sequence from where he left off. Plays continues back and forth in this manner until both players pass. Once that happens the cards played thus far are pushed to the side of the field and the second player to pass turns over the top card of the deck which becomes a new base card. The first player to pass then begins the new round. The first player to empty his hand wins the round and takes one of the go stones. The first player to get 5 go stones wins. If the deck runs out of cards the already played cards are re-shuffled and play continues.

Here is an example beginning for a game of Poka:
In this case the base card is a May card. The player has a June card and two July cards so he plays the June card and one of the July cards (because he can't play both). He has no August cards, so play moves to his opponent:

Special Rules:

1. If the base card is a January card and the player has both a January card and a February card in his hand, he may play both. This special rule only applies to January and February.

2. If a player empties his hand on his first turn he receives 2 go stones instead of 1.

There are 3 wild cards that can be used as any month:
