Number of Players: 2 Cards Used: 1 full deck of 48 cards Game Length: Not set Goal: To form as many captured hands as possible Hachi does not use the standard point values for the cards. Instead, all poetry slip cards are worth 1 point, and all other cards are worth 10 points. Before dealing the players should decide how many points they want to bet on each game. Once that's decided, the dealer deals 7 cards to each player and 6 cards to the field. The deck is placed in the middle of the field. Here's an example of a Hachi starting position with both players' hands, the field and the deck: ![]() There are no dealt hands in Hachi, so play begins straight away. Starting with the dealer and continuing in a counter-clockwise direction, each player captures cards (as described in the General Rules) until neither player has any any cards remaining in his hand. Play does not stop when a player forms a captured hand. Capturing cards is done a little differently in Hachi than in other hanafuda games, in that cards do not necessarily 'match' each other just because they are from the same month. The chart below shows what months can be used to capture cards from what other months.
Once their hands are gone, the players add up the values of all their completed hands and compare scores. The player with the higher score wins the round. If a player wins 2 consecutive rounds by more than 20 points each time, he wins the game and collects whatever number of points was decided upon at the beginning of the game. There are 21 captured hands in Hachi, all of which are 3 card combinations. The contents of the 21 hands are quite repetitive, which means that players have to be careful not to miss any hands when adding them. 5 cards may contain as many as 3 hands. The following are the captured hands used in Hachi:
