This is apparently the most popular hanafuda game played in Korea. It also goes by the names of Hwatu and Go-Stop.

Number of Players: 2 or 3

Cards Used: 1 full deck of 48 cards (or possibly 50)

Game Length: no limit

Goal: To form captured hands faster than your opponent

If playing with 3 players, the dealer deals 7 cards face-down to each player and 6 face-up to the field. If playing with 2 players, each player receives 10 cards and the field 8.

An example deal:

There is only one dealt hand in Godori, which should be checked for once hands have been dealt. It is:

President
大統領
4 cards from the same month

If a player has the President hand he wins the round and gains 5 points. Otherwise play begins. Starting with the dealer each player captures cards (as described in the General Rules). This continues until a player collects captured hands worth at least 3 points (the hands are shown below) or the players run out of cards. If the players run out of cards the round is a draw and no points are scored.

If a player collects 3 points they have to make a choice whether or not to continue in an attempt to get a higher score. They announce 'Go' or 'Stop'.

If the player announces 'Go', the game continues as before. 'Go' is a way for a player to bet that he can form a new captured hand (or improve the existing hand) before his opponent can form his first hand. If the player succesfully improves an existing hand (by going from 10 dregs to 11 dregs, for example) or forms a new hand before his opponent does he must then choose whether to 'go' again or 'stop'. If an opponent captures 3 points of cards then that opponent also has the choice to 'go' or 'stop'. Only the first player to declare 'stop' receives any points.

The following captured hands are used in Godori:

Additional Rules

There is one exception to the General Rules in regards to how cards are captured. In Godori, if a player captures a card in the field using a card from his hand and the extra card he draws from the deck matches those two cards, all 3 of the cards stay on the table. The player who then plays or draws the 4th card captures all 4.

If the player announces 'Stop', he wins the round. He gains points for all of his captured hands.

There are some special cards in Godori:

Counts as 2 dregs
Counts as 2 dregs or 1 animal (not both)
Counts as 2 dregs
"Joker 2"
Counts as 2 dregs
"Joker 3"
Counts as 3 dregs

'Joker 2' and 'Joker 3' refer to two cards that are included in Korean hanafuda decks. They are not included in Japanese decks, but many decks have blank or tengu cards that can be substituted for them. If not, the game can be played without them.

If a player has a Joker card in their hand they put it among their captured cards and draw a replacement from the deck for their hand. This does not count as a turn. If a player draws a Joker from the deck at this point or when attempting to capture cards from the field they capture the Joker and draw a replacement card from the deck. If there is a Joker card in the the initial field the dealer captures it.

If a player receives 3 cards from the same suit in his opening hand, he has a choice. He can choose to 'open' his hand and show the other players those 3 cards. If a player has not opened his hand and the 4th card of that suit is in the field, the player can 'bomb' the field by playing all 3 of those cards from his hand at once and capture all 4. If a player bombs the field he flips over two cards from the deck and adds them to the field (capturing as normal if there is a match).

If, at the end of your round, there are no cards in the field or you have captured all 4 cards from a single month in that round, all other players must give you 1 captured dregs card (if they have one). You also receive cards if you discarded a card into the field (i.e., the card did not have a match) and you capture it with the card you draw from the deck (and there are still cards remaining in the deck.)

Your score is doubled after winning:

if you declare 'go' 3 times (your score is doubled again for each additional 'go'. Thus, if you 'go' 5 times, your score is x8)
if you have opened your hand or bombed the field
if no player won the last round
if you scored points with dregs, players with less than 5 captured dregs pay double
if you scored points with lights, players with no captured lights pay double
if you have 7 or more captured animals
Note: the above bonuses stack.

At the end of a round the winning player adds up his score, applies any multipliers and then receives that number of points from each of the other players (receiving double/quadruple points from those players who owe extra points as seen in the above chart).
